Barker at Barcelona Supercup Test2012 Parr driver Ben Barker successfully completed his first test of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup in Barcelona yesterday. The 21 year old got his first taste of the brand new 991 GT3 cup car at the first group test of the year and acquitted himself very well. His best lap time of 1:50.141 was good enough to place him tenth in the times ahead of some prodigious and illustrious drivers.

Supercup regular Stefan Rosina was fastest, setting a time of 1:49.342 in the final session with a gap of 0.799 of a second to Ben. Ben’s time was faster than 2011 Supercup rookie of the year and race winner Kevin Estre, Christian Engelhart and Jean-Karl Vernay. Further back was fellow series debutant and multiple touring car champion Alain Menu.

“It was a really good test,” said Ben. “I’m learning the car and the track so two days was useful. The new 991 has a lot of the same mannerisms as the old car but it is longer; so it’s not as responsive in the slower stuff but faster through the sweeping bits. Overall I’m really happy to be in the top ten against the best in the world.”

“He worked very hard with the new car, achieving a very good position and it’s very clear that Ben showed his potential in a strong field.” Said Parr boss Paul Robe. “It’s tough to go to a circuit you don’t know in a car you don’t know and perform but he did it and he showed the quality that we know he’s got.”

His next outing will be at Monza in Italy on 25th & 26th April.
