GT3 Cup Challenge Donington TestThe Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge season starts this weekend at Donington Park and is sure to provide some exciting racing. Porsche specialist Parr Motorsport will be entering three cars in the championship designed for early model 997 GT3 Cup cars. Series returnee Mark Cowne will be heading the driver line-up and he will be joined by two racing debutants Rob Boughton and Pete Henney.

The championship allows gentleman drivers and young hot shots to compete in a professional championship run by a major manufacturer. It is the first rung on Porsche’s pyramid of motorsport and site above club racing and just below the Carrera Cup GB in which Parr also compete. It acts as an ideal stepping-stone to professional status and international racing.

“Since deciding to race just over a month ago it has been a high octane roller-coaster ride.” Commented Pete. “The mechanics at Parr Motorsport did a fantastic job of taking a rather neglected Cup car and getting it race ready for my first test in record time. Paul Robe’s extensive experience and Ben Barker’s sublime speed and tuition skills have brought my driving to a completely new level. With the first race a couple of days away I may not be a front runner but I will be in a Porsche race and I will be having fun.“

Compatriot Rob Boughton was equally enthused by the prospect of his first race in the seven race series. “I just want to enjoy myself and make it to the end of the race!” said Rob after testing yesterday at Donington.

Mark Cowne will be racing for the second time this month at Donington Park having accidentally competed in a club race last weekend in a 944S. His son’s racing license did not come through in time for his first race so Mark had to deputise and had a whale of a time.

I’m delighted that we’re starting the year at Donington,” said Mark. “After last weekend I really enjoy it so I’m looking forward to getting back into the 997 and racing and I know Parr will do a great job in supporting me.”

“We’re looking forward to the start of the Challenge with Rob, Peter and Mark.” Added Paul Robe “Peter’s really driving quite well and starting to get the times in. Rob is learning, he doesn’t have as much experience in these cars as Peter but he’s really starting to explore the parameters on the car. Mark hasn’t been able to test before the season due to work commitments but he’s raced here before and will no doubt do a good job.”

“It’s also been very good for these guys to work with Ben Barker our driver coach. He’s really current, that means he knows the circuit, he knows every bump and kerb to aim for and it’s been evident that they have responded to his input and that is important. From the engineering side we work hard with them on the data to give them confidence and show them exactly what they’re doing and what they can do to get the best out of the car. The combination is working really well and that what offer at Parr.”
