Smallwood and Barket take GT Cup Victory

Parr Motorsport drivers Pete Smallwood and Ben Barker teamed up to take overall victory in Saturday’s GT Cup endurance race. Ben took time off from his Porsche Supercup campaign to compete in his first endurance race with Carrera Cup driver Pete.

The race was held on the Brands Hatch Indy circuit in Kent against a diverse field of machinery. The GT Cup operates a four class structure to allow drivers to compete equally. The Bluebeards GT3 Cup car Pete usually runs in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB was categorised into GTB class behind the faster GTC Ferraris and GTO Moslers and Porsche RSRs and Ferrari Scuderias.

The duo performed fantastically well over the course of the forty minute race to take second on the road behind Riley Daytona Prototype. The Riley however was running in the Invitation class as it is not technically allowed to run in the championship. Thus the Parr Motorsport entry was duly handed the overall victory.

“I really enjoyed it”, said Pete with a big smile on his face. “I didn’t get the start I needed so I was stuck behind a very wide but very fair Lotus. I could see I could go a lot quicker if I could only get past. It was a cracking race for sixteen laps and Ben did a fantastic job in the car”.

“It was good fun,” added Ben. “Coming into the weekend you don’t know who was racing and there is a quick car there in the prototype. We couldn’t have beaten that but Pete drove really well and he was pushing and hustling but it was a sensible drive. When I got in I had loads of clear air and it was just a case of looking after the tyres as I was having to nurture them a bit.”

Pete will be out again at Oulton Park this weekend for Rounds 7 & 8 of the Porsche Carrera Cup. Ben will be racing next at the end of June at Silverstone for the next Supercup Round at the British Grand Prix.
