Pete Smallwood at Oulton Park

Pete Smallwood gained some valuable mileage in free practice ahead of his first race here at Oulton Park for the Porsche Carrera Cup GB on Sunday. The Chrome Bluebeards Revenge branded car looked spectacular in the glinting sun as he completed laps around the 2.2 mile circuit.

Session one was about learning the track in the dry as Pete’s only previous experience had been the week before on a wet test day. “It was a good starting point.” Said Pete. “It went pretty well and I was pleased with that. Unfortunately I lost a big chunk of time in the last sector because there was water all over the last corner so I was cautious going through it. It gave me something to aim for in FP2.”

Free Practice Two got underway just before lunch with the objective of focusing on qualifying pace. Pete had a problem with his seating position and he wasn’t able to get truly comfortable in the seat and this affected his performance on track. The team will have to investigate it and get Pete comfortable ahead of qualifying tomorrow. “I can drag a bit more time out for me,” said Pete, “but I have to be realistic and try not to ruin the tyres for the race.”

Pete was able to set a faster practice time than the morning session lapping nearly three quarters of a second faster. Driver coach and Supercup driver Ben Barker commented: “He did good, there’s consistency there so it’s just a case of stringing it together for qualifying.”

Team boss Paul Robe shared this opinion. “Peter drove very well. He could have been a bit quickest but he’s not been here before in these conditions and it’s a tough place.  We’re working on the data and we’re happy where he was. It’s just a shame we haven’t got more people to race with.”

Qualifying starts at 12:05 tomorrow.
