2013 Preview

Silverstone Test

Media release:14 March 2013

Michael Meadows made his intentions for the 2013 Porsche Carrera Cup GB very clear when he headed the times during the major pre-season test day at Silverstone on Thursday (14 March).

The defending champion, running with the new Samsung Smart Motorsport team prepared by GT Marques, ended the day with a best lap of 55.978s. On a cold but dry day, Meadows’ time was nine-tenths of a second under the existing lap record and just four-hundredths adrift of the best ever qualifying lap set by Nick Tandy in October 2011.
However, the quality of the competition expected in the 2013 Carrera Cup GB was amplified when the next six drivers lapped within half a second of Meadows’ benchmark. “It was good to get back in the car and work with the team,” said Meadows after a very productive day of running.
Heading the chase of Meadows was Carrera Cup Scholarship driver Dan Lloyd (Team Parker Racing). “It’s all looking good,” said Lloyd after a busy day of testing, sponsor hosting and media work which included a slot on the Radio 2 Drivetime show broadcast to an audience of more than five million listeners. “There is definitely a little bit in me and a little bit in the car,” added Lloyd.
Right behind Lloyd with a best of 56.247s was Ben Barker (Parr Motorsport) and his plans for 2013 are due to be confirmed in a few days. Meanwhile, championship newcomer Dean Stoneman (Redline Racing) showed that he is going to be a major contender this season by lapping fourth quickest in 56.265s. “I’m still learning the car, but we are there or thereabouts,” said Stoneman after a day of working through set-up changes.
2012 race winners Rory Butcher (Celtic Speed) and Jonas Gelzinis (Juta Racing) were both firmly in the mix by posting best laps of 56.341s and 56.424s respectively. Meanwhile, two more championship newcomers showed impressive early pace given their limited seat time so far as Richard Kent (Samsung Smart Motorsport) and Dan De Zille (Redline Racing) ended the day with best laps of 56.495s and 56.601s.
In the Pro-Am1 category Spanish racer Victor Jimenez (Redline Racing) had a strong day to go top of the times on 56.681s. However, he faces tough Pro-Am opposition from drivers like Keith Webster (Redline Racing), George Brewster (Celtic Speed) and Peter Smallwood (Parr Motorsport).
The 2013 season starts in style at Brands Hatch on 30/31 March with the opening round marking the 200th race in the history of the Carrera Cup GB.
